Askfödd – An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir- Blog Tour

Askfödd is the Swedish title of An Ember in the Ashes, which translates to ”Born from the ashes” which I feel is a good translation of the original title. I’ve had my eyes on it for quite a while and when B.Wahlströms had review copies of the Swedish version I was happy to apply for one. I got an e-book version from B.Wahlströms and this is my review for the blog tour.

In this book we get to follow two main characters, Laia and Elias. I expected this book to be centered around the love story between Laia and Elias. I didn’t expect this book to give me much, let alone anything new. I was wrong. This book was not like I presumed it would be and I’m so happy I read it. I love a good romance and I thought this book would have a rather predictable romance story, but it didn’t. I liked how there weren’t just two people in focus, but that the complexity of the other relations wasn’t forgotten. In many books I feel the main characters fall in love immediately and nothing else matters. I liked how the romance is a part of this story, but it’s not all the book focuses around. I really like how Saaba Tahir has constructed this story, the relationships and the fantasy world. This books does not have a slow pace, it’s the opposite. I could not put this book down and I devoured it in a few days.

The book kicks off with a raid that comes to shape all of Laia’s life. All of her family is killed and her brother captured. Elias is the son of the Commander and is soon to be graduating from Blackcliff Military Academy. These two lives shows different sides of this society and I love how we get these two perspectives in this book. Tahir has a great way or writing and I was hooked from the beginning. There’s a lot of action, intrigues and fighting as well as rebellion, lies and jealousy. It’s a great book I highly recommend people to read. It’s not a lighthearted book, but if you want a good fast paced action-packed book this could be it. Some parts of the book are pretty dark and I like how the author hasn’t shied away from it.

The Swedish translator has done a great job on this book. The translation is impeccable and I really enjoyed reading it in Swedish. I really can’t wait for the second book!

I really like this cover which is quite different from the other international versions I’ve seen. This is the most colourful one and the one that I feel really portrays the turmoil and hardship in the book. I like how, even though we have the portraits of Laia and Elias on the cover, it still leaves a lot to your own imagination. It’s a cool cover!

  1. Geh… I’ve seen this one doing the rounds on all the YA social medias I’m following and I have to say… I’m not feeling *any* of the covers. Why does YA fantasy cover design have to be so ugly?

    1. I do agree with you that YA fantasy covers doesn’t get as good covers as other fantasy novels, but I like this one.
I think maybe they have gotten stuck in a way of how the covers “should” look like to appeal to the younger audiences.
